For years, the market was dominated primarily by fabrics on white/cream and black backgrounds complemented by current color trends. In the last 10 years or so, the browns replaced the black backgrounds. Now the new upcoming color predicted to replace the browns are the grays.

Spice is the new red/orange. It is a great color with many oriental rugs. Look for spice to often be combined with a deep navy blue.

Teal/Aqua/ Spa is making its debut again and this time it is spectacular. The color is tranquil and clean, yet vibrant. The fabrics done in this color pallet this season are truly beautiful. Don’t anticipate this color disappearing from the market for quite some time.

Robin's Egg/Seafoam Blue continues to dominate the market. This is the newest neutral that isn’t going away. Two seasons ago, Coral was added to the Robin’s Egg Blue/Brown fabrics. This season, look for a Seafoam Green to be added to the Robin’s Egg Blue/ Brown combination or just the plain Blue/Brown combination. The browns used now include the beautiful Taupy/Gold color that is the number one selling silk color. It is a stunning combination.

Purple has again joined the ranks of the trendy colors. The current purples are clean and clear or soft being used again with soft greens and creams. The new purples are definitely not in the aubergene family.

Classic Fabric Color Trends

Neutrals (whites, creams, etc.) still to hold a dominant position in the market and are available in many beautiful tone on tone woven patterns great for any design project.

Blues now extend beyond the teal and robin’s egg blues to include great navy blues and a blue that is not a royal, but not as dark as a navy. If you love blues, now is the time to find what you are looking for.

Where Have All The Prints Gone?

The days of having a limitless selection of beautiful printed fabrics to choose from are gone. Sadly, most of the sources that printed fabrics have closed leaving very few places for fabric houses to acquire prints. Printed fabrics have always been 10 times more costly to produce than woven fabrics making them no longer financially a wise investment for most fabric houses to offer. In this economy, their decision to no longer carry prints is completely understandable. For those still willing to make the investment, their prints are generally large florals comprised of very few colors.

If you love prints, we encourage you to take advantage of the selection remaining on our floor. It may require thinking outside of the box to design your project with the yardage left on a bolt…i.e. using the print for banding only, but well worth the effort to create a one of a kind design.

Indoor/Outdoor “Cleanable” Fabrics

When designing with children, dogs, or special needs in mind, one should always consider the Indoor/Outdoor Clean With Clorox Fabrics which are guaranteed for 3 years when cleaned properly. To clean this product, one should try regular cleaning products first and then wipe off any dirt. If that is not successful, spray on Clorox and rinse it off. If possible, take the product outside and rinse it off with a hose.

As for mildew, fabric does not mildew. It is the dirt on the fabric that mildews. So if you remove the dirt, you will also remove any mildew built up on your fabric.

The touch and feel of the new Indoor/Outdoor Fabrics is softer than the ones produced in the past making them even nicer for indoor use in Family Rooms, Kids’ Rooms, and Kitchens. Why not consider a slipcover using one of these fabrics today for easy cleanup?

Exquisite Fabrics

& Elegant Trims

that Inspire Great Designs

The Second Yard has hundreds of designer fabrics in-stock as well as a selection of trims coordinated by color.
